About Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy has been available in the UK for over 100 years.  It is a well recognised discipline accepted by the medical profession and now available to some on the NHS.  Osteopathy offers manual treatment for a wide variety of conditions stemming from the musculo-skeletal system.  Central to the osteopathic concept is that if the structure of the body has been impaired then it is unable to function efficiently.  The osteopath will assess the structure of the body by examining areas such as posture, function and quality of movement.  This form of assessment is the main strength of the osteopathic profession, as it takes into account all aspects of a patient’s lifestyle in order to treat the cause of the condition, not just the symptoms of it.

Emma uses a variety of Osteopathic techniques, including soft tissue massage, gentle manipulation, stretching and Cranial Osteopathy.  She is also able to advise on lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise and posture.

What does treatment involve?

An Osteopath will take a detailed medical history from the patient followed by a careful examination which will lead the practitioner to an appropriate diagnosis.  Once the examination has been completed, a decision will be made as to whether osteopathic treatment is suitable and if so what form of approach is indicated.

Osteopathic treatment is gentle and non-invasive.  It aims to improve mobility, reduce muscular spasm, and restore function.
